Job Description

The School Nurse plays a vital role in maintaining the health and well-being of students within the educational environment. As a critical member of the school community, you will provide comprehensive health services to students and staff, ensuring a safe and healthy learning atmosphere. You will care for students' physical and emotional needs, administer necessary medical interventions and promotes health education. You will evaluate students' health statuses, manages chronic conditions and responds to emergencies while working closely with parents, teachers and school administrators. By offering a range of health services and health education programs, you will contribute to reducing absenteeism and improving academic achievement. Furthermore, you will advocate for students' health needs and collaborate with community health resources to provide holistic support. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, the ability to work independently in a dynamic environment, and a passion for nurturing students' health. This position requires a keen understanding of childhood development and the various health issues that can impact a child's learning experience. The School Nurse is integral to fostering a culture of wellness within the school, allowing students to thrive both academically and personally.

Job Responsibilities
  • Managing our students’ wellness and development and offering them psycho-social support as needed.

  • Provide the students with basic health services throughout the school day and night.

  • Diagnose and treat minor illnesses among students and maintain the records.

  • Maintaining close liaison with the medical staff at the nearest private hospital consistently.

  • Handle confidential situations, information, and documentation.

  • Develop health plans for students with medical conditions.

  • Maintain an updated record of all medication in the infirmary and tracking student medical history.

  • Ensure students adhere to their prescription medication

  • Support students with special medical conditions and advise the school accordingly

  • Develop a robust reporting system within the infirmary and communicate with the procurement team in a timely manner.

  • Communicate effectively at all levels with students, staff, parents and other clinicians and paramedics.

  • Organize a professional development training for students and teammates addressing pertinent health issues.

  • Inspecting boarding house facilities (toilets and bathrooms, laundry area) when pupils are away from the facilities and appraise the level of hygiene and cleanliness.

  • Monitoring standards achieved by cleaners and other support agencies within the boarding house and report on any deficiencies to school management.

  • Managing students with chronic medical conditions and students with disabilities.

  • Keeping an up to date inventory of the infirmary supplies and create procurement lists on stock depletion.

  • Keep daily incident reports for all health and safety incidents reported.

  • Ensure Centre/ School environment is safe for students and school staff to prevent communicable diseases

  • Accompany students to hospitals and write referrals to paediatricians and other health specialists.

  • Advise other staff and parents on handling students with sensitive medical cases where necessary.

  • Develop a supplemental diet for students with nutritional deficiencies or special medical conditions and ensure it’s adhered to.

  • Ensure prompt adherence in administering prescribed medication and attending medical appointments.

  • Sensitize the school community on emerging health issues.

  • First aid champion to save lives of students in an emergency situation.

  • Develop annual work plans, procurement plans and budget for the clinic.

  • Provide psychological counselling to the Students and parents where applicable.

  • Establish the vaccination status for all the students and ensure they get mandatory MOH vaccinations.

  • Evacuation and Referral support for students who need more health interventions than can be offered at the school.

  • Support the catering department by ensuring that students take all meals and especially fruits and vegetables.

Skills, Requirements and Qualifications
  • You have a diploma or degree in nursing with great people skills.

  • Must be a registered nurse with a valid practice license from the nursing council of Kenya and in good standing.

  • Strong clinical skills and knowledge of paediatric health

  • A professional, flexible and conscientious registered nurse with the ability to build a harmonious, energetic and cohesive relationship with students and co-workers.

  • Professional counselling skills with a proven track record will be an advantage.

  • Experience as a registered nurse essential but not necessary. Having worked in a school setting would be desirable!

  • You are willing to reside on the school campus under the school’s housing scheme.

  • Ability to train students on basic health practices and standards

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and email applications.

  • Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems and medical office software.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients and healthcare team members.

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities.

  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards in healthcare practice.

  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols.

  • Empathy, patience, and compassion when interacting with individuals in need of support.

  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet varying care needs.

  • Willingness to undergo additional training and development as required.

  • Demonstrate an ability to make and sustain professional therapeutic relationships.

  • Demonstrate an ability and awareness to maintain personal boundaries.

  • Must be willing to work with students.

  • Adhere to local and national health regulations and policies
